1st Company in 1957. After leave I went to Class "A" Radioman School in Norfolk, VA. Upon graduation was stationed at MSTS in Washington, DC. When that was completed I was supposed to go on the USS Vermilion (AKA-107) but it was in the Med. I went to visit some fellow radio school friends on the USS Arneb (AKA-56) which was in dry dock in Newport News, VA. and while I there was told by one of the RM1's that they needed Radioman on the Arneb, and he gave me the name of a CPO at COMPHIBLANT to talk to, to have my orders changed. Monday morning I went to the chief and he changed my orders to the Arneb. The Arneb was part of Operation Deep Freeze V. We took supplies down to McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. I had the privilege of going thru the Panama Canal, and in visiting Panama, New Zealand, Australia and Tasmania. The XO on the Arneb was Commander Ingram who I knew from MSTS. He was then a LT CDR. He made me the postal clerk on the ship. I really enjoyed my 4 years of serving my company. I would enjoy hearing from anyone.
