Briefly, our mission is to preserve the memory and history of a facility that served the United States during war and peace time from 1942 until 1976.
We encourage you to learn more about us by browsing our site, and, perhaps you will be convinced of the value of our efforts so that you will decide to join us and assist in meeting our goals.
The U.S. Naval Training Center, Bainbridge served the United States Navy for 34 years from its beginning as a recruit training command in 1942 to its closing on March 31, 1976. During that period of time it also served as, among other functions, a mustering-out facility, the home for the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS), the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES), the Naval Reserve Manpower Center, and various specialized training schools. The Navy announced its intention to close the base in 1971 resulting in the final closing in 1976. In 1999, the Federal Government having met commitments made in 1942 to the town of Port Deposit, MD and Environmental Protection Agency mandates, turned the Bainbridge facility over to the State of Maryland.
